SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars (18-24) won for the eighth time in their last ten games with a double header sweep over the Lions of Lindenwood University (11-35). UIS held on for a 6-5 win in game one before handing the Lions an 8-0 loss in game two behind a one-hit pitching performance from
Rachel Goff.
GAME ONE: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 6, LINDENWOOD 5
Lindenwood jumped ahead early with a run in the top of the first off of
Alexandria Smith to take a quick 1-0 lead. Smith stranded two runners to end the inning and limit the damage. The Prairie Stars responded in the second when
Ashli King blasted her fifth homerun of the season to left center field, tying the game at one.
In the fourth,
Jordyn Larsen combined fundamental hitting with superb, heads up base running as she singled in two runs with an RBI single. On the throw in from center, Larsen took second and saw the throw went past the catcher and ricocheted down the line so she went to third, before realizing that nobody was covering home, so she took that base as well. Larsen crossed the plate and gave UIS a 4-1 advantage.
The Lions scored two unearned runs in the sixth to bring the score within a run at 4-3 but UIS scored twice in the bottom half to gain some insurance runs.
Smith closed out the game by stranding the tying run at third base, notching her first and only strikeout of the game to end the game. Smith improved to 6-10 on the season with the win, giving up five runs (three earned) on eight hits.
GAME TWO: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 8, LINDENWOOD 0
The second game was much less dramatic due in part to the outstanding pitching performance from sophomore,
Rachel Goff. The righty from Edwardsville, Illinois picked up her first collegiate win by throwing a complete game one-hitter, allowing just two base runners all game.
Brittany Miller singled in
BriAnna Edgar in the first to set the tone and give UIS the early lead, one they would never relinquish. Larsen tallied the next RBI with a bunt single, executing a squeeze play to perfection and then Goff came into score on a passed ball, giving UIS a 3-0 lead.
Miller extended the inning with an RBI single after
Madi Torry was hit by a pitch to keep the rally going. The biggest hit came off the bat of
Molly Manietta though, as her three-run blast gave UIS an 8-0 lead, plenty for Goff to work with in the circle.
The Prairie Stars will host Missouri S&T on Saturday and then celebrate senior day on Sunday as they host the Drury Panthers to close out the home portion of their schedule. The Prairie Stars are currently two games out of the GLVC tournament with eight games remaining in conference play. Â
