SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Prairie Stars (20-24, 10-14) extended their scoreless inning streak to 17 as they shut out Missouri S&T (13-32, 3-13) in both ends of the double header, picking up an 8-0 win and a 1-0 win. Rachel Goff was the difference maker in game two.
GAME ONE: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 8, MISSOURI S&T 0
The scoring began with a
Molly Manietta solo shot to left field, giving the senior her fifth homerun of the season and pushing her to 20 RBI's on the season. UIS wasn't done yet though, as they pushed across eight runs in the second inning, which was more than enough for
Alexandria Smith to take home the victory.
Jordyn Larsen kept the rally going with an RBI single to center and then
Madi Torry scored
Alexa McClaughry on a fielders choice later in the inning. The biggest shot of the inning came from
Brittany Miller, as the senior power hitter left the yard with the bases loaded, giving UIS a 7-0 advantage. The homerun tied
Amanda Gosbeth for most on the team with seven, and gave her 25 RBI's on the season, also a team best.
After the homerun, Gosbeth was hit by a pitch, then stole second and came into score on a double from Manietta, for her second RBI of the inning.
Smith went the distance, throwing five innings of shutout ball, giving up just two hits and striking out four. She picked up her seventh win of the season in dominating fashion as the Prairie Stars outhit the Miners 6-to-2 in the game.
GAME TWO: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 1, MISSOURI S&T 0
Jaycee Craver, not to be outdone by Smith, took the circle for game two and followed up the two-hit performance, with a complete game (seven innings) three hit performance of her own, striking out five and walking just one batter. The freshman righty picked improved to 12-11 on the season with the win and threw her fifth shutout of the year and third in her last four starts.
The lone run of the game came in the second inning as Gosbeth leadoff with a seven pitch walk before stealing second and advancing to third on a bunt single from Manietta.
Ashli King loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch for the 11
th time this season, tying Miller for the most on the team.
Rachel Goff then drew a five pitch walk, bring in Gosbeth for the eventual game-winning run.
The Prairie Stars improved to 20-24, 10-14 win the sweep and have now won four straight and ten of their last twelve, as they make a push into the GLVC tournament. UIS is now one game out of the final playoff spot, a game back of William Jewell. With six games remaining, UIS will face Drury in their final home games before heading on the road to face Rockhurst and William Jewell --- the two other teams chasing the final playoff spot --- in the final four games of the regular season.
