OAKLAND CITY, IND. --- In their first true road games of the season, the Prairie Stars (6-10) swept Oakland City and increased their winning streak to three games. UIS launched three home runs in the first game in a come from behind win while a five-run first inning led the Prairie Stars to a 10-1 win in game two.
Jaycee Craver picked up both wins in the circle to improve to 5-4 on the season.
GAME 1: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 6, OAKLAND CITY 3A two-run second inning for the Mighty Oaks gave them a two-run lead early, but after that, Craver settled down and shut the home team down for the rest of the game. In the fourth, UIS tied the game as
Madi Torry opened the inning by reaching on an error and swiping second. This preceded an
Ashli King home run to tie the game at 2-2. UIS had two more runners reach in the inning but were unable to push the go ahead run across.
Oakland City took the lead back in the fifth with a one-out single and led 3-2 into the sixth.
Amanda Gosbeth hit a one-out double to left center and scored on a clutch two-out RBI single from
Rachel Goff.
Tied 3-3 after seven, the Prairie Stars exploded for three runs in extra innings as King led off with a double. Gosbeth then added to her huge game with a two-run blast to right center, giving UIS their first lead.
Molly Manietta then went back-to-back and homered to left field after a relief pitcher had just come in.
Craver struck out two batters in the final frame to lock down the 6-3 win for UIS.
GAME 2: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 10, OAKLAND CITY 1The Prairie Stars did not wait around in the second game to take control of the game, scoring five runs in the top of the first.
Brittany Miller singled to start the rally and went to second on a single from King. Gosbeth then hit her second home run of the day, a three-run shot to right, giving UIS a 3-0 lead. Alex McClaughry started another rally with a single before stealing second and scored on a Goff double.
BriAnna Edgar scored Goff on her double and UIS led 5-0 after one.
The Mighty Oaks pushed one run across in the bottom half but UIS came back with two of their own in the second. Not to be outdone, King tallied two RBI on her second homer of the day, scoring Miller who walked. After two innings, UIS led 7-1.
Torry recorded an RBI on a bunt in the fifth and then Manietta knocked a double to score Gosbeth and Goff hit another double to score
Trisha Faulkner to close out the scoring.
On the day, the Prairie Stars recorded 24 hits and scored 16 runs. Of the 24 hits, 13 went for extra bases, including five that left the park. King and Gosbeth each hit two home runs while Manietta provided the fifth. Gosbeth ended the day 4-for-8 with two doubles, two home runs, four runs, and five RBI. Goff tallied a team high five hits on the day, including two doubles while King also had four hits --- a double and two home runs --- and knocked in four.
Edgar and Manietta each had three hits while
Haley Inman and McClaughry had two.
The Prairie Stars have now won three straight and will travel to Truman State on Saturday to begin GLVC play.
