SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Prairie Stars (10-16) continued GLVC play as they took on UMSL (27-2) twice at home on Sunday. They faced all-American lefty, Hannah Perryman, in both games but were able to get their offense going in game two. UIS fell 4-0 in the first game before falling 6-3 in the final game.
GAME ONE: UMSL 4, ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 0Rachel Goff got the start in the circle in game one and threw five strong innings, giving up just three earned on eight hits. The sophomore righty help the Tritons scoreless through four innings before giving up two runs in the top of the fifth. Goff worked around baserunners in every inning but only allowed one runner to reach third in the first four innings.
Madi Torry picked up a hit for UIS in the first but was stranded as Perryman struck out two.
Brittany Miller got the offense going in the fourth with a one-out double to center field but again, the UMSL starter struck out the final two batters to strand the UIS runner.
After UMSL increased their lead to 3-0 in the sixth, Alex Smith relieved Goff and was able to work out of a jam, limiting the damage in the inning. Smith gave up a run in the seventh but after a
Hannah Kain single in the fifth, the final eight UIS batters were retired for the 4-0 final.
GAME TWO: UMSL 6, ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 3Prairie Stars ace,
Jaycee Craver, got the call for game two, and again, held the potent UMSL offense down for most of the game. After surrendering a run in the first inning, Craver gave up one more in the third, but for the most part, kept the Tritons from putting together any significant rallies.
In the fourth innings, down 2-0, Torry laid down a perfect bunt, resulting in a single to leadoff the inning.
BriAnna Edgar followed suit by taking a 1-0 pitch over the right field wall for her first career homerun.
With the game tied 2-2, Craver shut down the Tritons in the fifth but surrendered two runs in the sixth.
UIS responded with a run in the bottom half and
Trisha Faulkner scored on a single from Miller. Faulkner worked a six pitch walk to leadoff the inning and Miller drove her in with a two-out single.
UMSL added two more in the seventh inning to go up 6-3 where it became final after UIS went down in order in the final frame.
Torry and Miller each had two hits on the day, while Kain and Edgar each had one. Edgar knocked in two runs in the second game via the long ball while Miller tallied one RBI.
The Prairie Stars fall to 10-16 on the season and 2-6 in GLVC play. UIS will travel to Evansville, Indiana on Saturday to take on Southern Indiana before traveling to Bellarmine on Sunday. UIS will play 14 of their final 18 games at home following this six game road trip.
