Prairie Stars Fall Late Against Maryvlle

SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Prairie Stars (10-14) took a lead in the first inning and lead the entire game, but the Saints of Maryville (17-3) scored six runs in the final frame to take game one 6-2. In the second game, UIS rallied late, scoring three runs in the sixth inning, but fell short, falling in the second game of the doubleheader 7-4.

GAME ONE: In the first inning, Madi Torry led off with a walk but was later forced out on a fielders' choice on a Brittany Miller groundball. A single from Ashli King put runners on first and second with two outs which set up a two-run double from Amanda Gosbeth. The double to left center scored both runners, giving UIS the early lead on the Saints.

Craver retired the next six batters and didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning after a first inning triple. In the fifth, Maryville cut into the lead as a single brought in a run but Craver pitched out of the jam but getting the final two batters to ground out back to the circle.

Haley Inman singled and stole in the fifth but was stranded after Torry struck out in a nine pitch battle.

UIS took a 2-1 lead into the final inning but a one out single started a rally and was followed by a walk to put runners on first and second. An unassisted putout by Inman at second recorded the second out for UIS but another walk loaded the bases for the Saints. The go-ahead hit came off the bat of Wendy Macias, who was the winning pitcher as well, a double to left center, scoring two. The Saints would plate five runs in the inning to take the game 6-2.

The Prairie Stars recorded only three hits in the game while Craver threw all seven innings, giving up six earned runs on seven hits.

GAME TWO: The Saints began the second game like they ended the first, scoring five runs in the first inning to take a commanding lead. UIS gained a run back in the third when Torry drove in Trisha Faulkner on an RBI groundout. Faulkner leadoff the inning with a double to left field, her third double of the season.

Maryville scored another run in the fourth and then extended their lead to 7-1 in the fifth before UIS rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Torry reached on an error on the shortstop to begin the inning and then Miller reached on a groundball that hit the third base bag. King followed with an RBI-double before Gosbeth singled to right, scoring Miller and forcing Nicole Taylor out of the game. Rachel Goff drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field, cutting the deficit to 7-4.

With the doubleheader loss, UIS falls to 10-14 on the season and 2-4 in the GLVC. The Prairie Stars will face #7 UMSL on Sunday in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00.
