SPRINGFIELD, IL --- In her first home start of her career at Illinois Springfield (10-12), freshman pitcher
Jaycee Craver threw a perfect game in a five-inning rout of Blackburn College (0-1). Craver didn't allow a single baserunner, striking out ten batters in her five innings of work as the Prairie Stars won 21-0 over Blackburn College. The offense obviously broke out, scoring 33 runs on the day in the doubleheader sweep. In game two, UIS fell behind early but went on to win 12-3 in five innings again. The perfect game is the first of its kind for UIS softball.
GAME ONE: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 21, BLACKBURN 0After Craver set down the Beavers in order, striking out two, in the top of the first, the Prairie Stars went to work with the bats, scoring six runs on five hits in their first plate appearance. The first five batters that stepped up to the plate scored for UIS as they took complete control of the game.
After their six run first inning, UIS put up five more runs in the second inning and seven more in the third, before closing out the game with three runs in the fourth. Eight different batters recorded a hit on the afternoon and nine different players recorded an RBI.
Ashli King,
Amanda Gosbeth,
Hannah Kain, and
Jordyn Larsen each had three hits while Kain led the way with a four RBI game.
Craver was obviously dominate, needing just 68 pitches to work through five innings while still striking out a season-high ten batters. She recorded one fly out and four ground balls on the day, turning in her second shut-out in her last three starts.
GAME TWO: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 12, BLACKBURN 3The second game was must more competitive as Blackburn took an early lead on a first inning homerun.
Alexandria Smith was in the circle for UIS, and struck out the side --- all looking --- in the first, outside of the one mistake. UIS rallied in the second to score three runs and take the lead as
Trisha Faulkner knocked a two-RBI single to right before
Madi Torry scored Faulkner with a single of her own.
Blackburn answered back with two in the fourth but it was all Prairie Stars after that, as they scored seven unanswered runs over the final two innings to take the game 12-3. The final blow was a bases clearing double from
Hannah Kain that served as the walk-off for the Prairie Stars.
Smith struck out four in just two innings of work, giving up just the one hit.
Rachel Goff finished the final three innings, striking out three and giving up two runs, though none were earned.
NOTES: The 21-runs are the most for any game since 2011 … UIS scored 33 runs on the day, the most since 2011 … UIS tallied 30 hits in the double header, giving up just six … Â
