Offense Stalls for Prairie Stars at Truman State

KIRKSVILLE, MO --- The Prairie Stars (8-12, 2-2) fell twice to the hands of Truman State (10-6, 2-0) by scores of 2-0 and 6-1. After two thrilling wins yesterday, the Prairie Stars' bats never got going as they garnered just one run in the double header on a total of five hits. Jaycee Craver took the loss in game one while Alexandria Smith was bested in the second game.

GAME ONE: TRUMAN STATE 1, ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 0
After an easy first inning of work, Craver worked around some trouble in the second inning as the Bulldogs loaded the bases with just one out. A fielders' choice to the shortstop Rachel Goff, where she got the lead runner at home recorded the second out for UIS and then Craver induced a popup which she caught herself to end the inning.

UIS didn't get a base runner until the fourth inning when Brittany Miller was hit by a pitch with two outs. Ashli King singled and the Prairie Stars had their first scoring chance, but Amanda Gosbeth went down on strikes to end the inning.

Truman State took the lead in the fifth on a two-out double and then tacked on an insurance run in the sixth via a solo homerun. UIS managed just one hit in the game as they fell for their first time in six games.

GAME TWO: TRUMAN STATE 6, ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 1
The first nine batters of the game were retired before Truman State led off the second inning with a double, and eventually took a 1-0 lead off Smith. The Bulldogs scored twice more on three hits in the third inning and twice more in the fourth to push their lead to 5-0.

UIS got some momentum in the top of the fifth when Gosbeth hit her third homerun of the week, a solo shot to lead off the fifth. Molly Manietta doubled later in the inning but was stranded at second.

Rachel Goff came in to relieve Smith in the fourth and shut down the Bulldogs until the sixth when she gave up a run, but stranded two more base runners.

On the game, UIS had just four hits, two from Manietta, the Gosbeth homerun, and another from King. Smith went 3.1 innings, giving up five earned on six hits before Goff finished the final 2.2, surrendering just one run.

The Prairie Stars had a five game winning streak snapped with the losses and are now 2-2 in the GLVC. They will open up at home next Saturday when the host Maryville for a double header at 12 pm before hosting UMSL on Sunday at the same time.
