Smith Dominates; Prairie Stars Beat Walsh 5-0

ROSEMONT, IL --- After suffering a couple tough defeats on the first two days of the Lewis Flyer Invitational, the Prairie Stars (4-10) dominated Wash (3-2) behind a two-hit performance from Alexandria Smith for a 5-0 win. UIS scored early and often, getting a run in each of the first three innings before tacking on two more in the fifth to secure the win.

The Prairie Stars racked up ten hits in the contest, getting two from Haley Inman, Madi Torry, and Molly Manietta. It was a balanced performance all around as seven different players recorded a hit, four players drove in a run, and all five runs came from different players. Brittany Miller reached base three times, which included an RBI double, walk, and hit-by-pitch.

On the bases, Inman stole two bases, her 10th and 11th steals of the season, which lead the team. Alex Brown also stole a base after pinch running for Miller. BriAnna Edgar also reached base twice on a hit-by-pitch, coming into score once.

In the first, Ashli King got the Prairie Stars on top with an RBI groundout, scoring Inman. Trisha Faulkner extended the lead in the second with a double to deep center field, scoring Rachel Goff, who reached previously on a single to center.

The Prairie Stars kept the pressure on in the third as Miller and King drew back-to-back walks to begin the inning. Manietta then doubled to right center on a 2-2 pitch, scoring Miller and pushing the score to 3-0.

UIS broke the game open in the fifth when Manietta collected her second hit to lead off the inning and then Edgar was hit by a pitch for the second time. Jordyn Larson, who entered the game for Inman, picked up a single to right center, scoring Manietta. Walsh then threw away an attempt to throw out Larsen, scoring Edgar on the play and making the score 5-0.

In the circle, Smith allowed just two hits in a complete game effort, striking out four and walking just one. Smith didn't allow a hit until the third inning, but worked around a leadoff single. She ended the game retiring 10 of the final 11 batters to shut the door and pick up her first win of the season.

The Prairie Stars move to 4-10 on the year and stop a five-game losing streak in the process. They have now concluded their neutral site games for the year, and will head on the road for their next three series before opening up at home on March 19th against Maryville. UIS will travel to face Oakland City on March 5th for a double-header at 12 and 2 o'clock.
