LEBANON, IL --- The Prairie Stars cut what was once a 16-point deficit down to just five in the third quarter, but were unable to sustain the run and fell to McKendree in the final game of the season 71-54. Syerra Cunningham picked up her fourth straight double-double and sixth in the last seven games with a 10 point and 14 rebound performance.
UIS fell behind early and then at 9-6, the Bearcats rolled off a 9-0 run to take an 18-6 lead after the first quarter. Cunningham ended the drought in the second quarter with a layup over four minutes in.
Meredith Marti closed out the quarter with two three's in her career year, and UIS found themselves down 13 at the half.
The Prairie Stars opened the second half with a 14-6 run and cut the deficit to just five with 4:11 remaining in the quarter, but five straight points from the Bearcats ended the run and then five quick points in the final minute gave them a 15 point advantage heading to the final quarter.
UIS couldn't overcome the deficit and fell to the conference rival 71-54 in the final game of the year. Cunningham recorded her eighth straight game with double-digit rebounds and ended the season second in the league in rebounds per game and total rebounds behind likely conference player of the year, Mariah Brawner – Henley. Marti hit three shots from deep, giving her 69 on the season, third most in the league.
Shelbi Patterson concluded her season with a 15 point, four rebound, three, assist, and two steal night, filling the stat sheet like she did all season. The sophomore guard led the team in points, steals, assists, and field goals, while playing the second most minutes on the team and starting in all 26 games.
