SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Prairie Stars (1-1) picked up their first victory of the season with an 82-65 win over the Illinois College Blueboys in their home opener.
Zach Steinberg led the way with a double-double, scoring a game-high 16 points and grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds. Five Prairie Stars scored in double figures as UIS shot 50 percent from the field for the game.
In a back-and-forth first half, the Prairie Stars and Blueboys exchanged the lead five times as the Blueboys took their largest lead with 7:16 remaining after a pair of free throws. UIS responded with a 16-3 run to take a 35-29 lead and would not relinquish the lead.
At the end of the half, UIS led the Blueboys 39-36 led by
Eddie Longmeyer who had ten points at the half. After a basket to open the half by IC, UIS went on a 9-0 run capped by a three from
Vince Walker and layup from
Zach Steinberg.
IC cut the deficit to just two with 9:43 remaining but UIS went on a 12-0 run to take control for good. During the run, UIS shot 4-for-5 from the field and it was capped by two free throws from Steinberg.
Longmeyer ended the night with 15 points and seven rebounds while also dishing out four assists. Walker added 11 points, making three three's and
Logan Gonce was a perfect 8-for-8 from the line as part of a 12 point, four assist effort.
Paxton Harmon added 10 points and four rebounds.
UIS will continue a six-game home stand on Wednesday as they welcome in Robert Morris – Springfield for a 7:30 pm tip following the conclusion of the women's game.
