SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Prairie Stars (8-17, 1-11) beat the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons (13-9, 7-5) in four sets to pick up their first conference win of the season. The Prairie Stars took the first two sets against the Tritons and then closed out the match in the fourth set to pick up their first ever win in nine matches against UMSL.
Illinois Springfield came out and took the first set 25-16, picking up 13 kills in the opening set. The Prairie Stars used nine UMSL errors in the first set to run away with the set.
In the second, UIS attacked at a .281 clip as a team, riding 14 kills to a 25-20 second set win. This was the fourth match all season that UIS went up 2-0 and they went on to win each one of those matches.
UMSL came out to take the third set 25-20, taking advantage of 10 Prairie Star errors and scoring 11 of the final 14 points of the set.
However, UIS came back to take the fourth set 25-22 to take the match. UIS tallied 14 kills against just six errors in the final set as UIS out attacked UMSL in three of the four sets.
Alli Splitt led the way for UIS with 13 kills against two errors on 24 total attacks. Splitt also added four block assists on the match for 16 total points.
Tiffany Sunderlin tallied 11 kills on the night and added 12 digs.
Alyssa Hasler, celebrating her birthday, had eight kills on the night and picked up two solo blocks with five block assists.
Kayla Katarzynski had a team-high 14 digs on the night while
Lexi Hall had 24 assists to go along with 17 from
Tiffany Wentworth.
UIS picked up their first win against UMSL in nine matches, and will return home on Saturday to face Maryville. Maryville is coming off three-set losses to McKendree, Rockhurst, and William Jewell.
