SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Prairie Stars (7-9-2, 6-7-2) closed their season out with a 3-1 victory over the McKendree Bearcats (3-8-4, 2-8-4). Four seniors picked up points on the night, led by
Zachary Allevi who notched two goals and an assist in the win, picking up his eighth and ninth goals of the year.
Kanye Sayon added the final goal in the 58
th minute --- his fifth of the season --- to give the Prairie Stars a two-goal lead and cruise to the two-goal victory.
Allevi began the night with a goal in the 14
th minute, assisted by fellow seniors
Mac Leverenz and
Dylan Stockman. The assist was Leverenz' second of the season and Stockman's first. The Bearcats responded in the 34
th minute with their only goal of the evening, burying one from nearly 40 yards out.
The game remained tied at the half but in the 58
th minute, the Prairie Stars jumped all over the Bearcats, scoring twice in under a minute's time. Allevi tallied the game-winning goal, flicking his second goal of the night, just over the goaltender off passes from
Eoin Watts and
Kanye Sayon.
32 seconds later, Sayon got in on the scoring, taking a pass from Allevi and
Naba Alzhyri and notching his fifth goal of the season to give the Prairie Stars the two-goal advantage.
Tommy Geile made five saves in net in just over 69 minutes in goal before turning over the net to
Kyle Hamilton who made two saves in the final 20 minutes of play.
With five points on the night, Allevi takes over sole possession of the all-time Division II points lead at UIS, with 33. He is also the all-time goals leader with 14 and sits second all-time with five assists. He ends the season tied for fourth in the GLVC in total points and goals, with 21 and 9, respectively.
Prior to the game, the Prairie Stars sat half a point behind Maryville and Bellarmine in the GLVC standings for the final playoff spot. UIS needed both Maryville and Bellarmine to either tie or lose as well as pick up at least a tie in the game against McKendree to make the playoffs. Maryville ended up beating UMSL in double overtime, pushing the Prairie Stars out of playoff contention.
The Prairie Stars nearly doubled their win total from last season, winning seven games in the first year of the
Adam Hall era, and won six games in the GLVC, opposed to just two last season. Illinois Springfield graduates six seniors from this year's squad.
