Box Score KIRKSVILLE, MO --- The Prairie Stars (5-7, 0-5) took on the Truman State Bulldogs (10-5, 4-1) to close out a two-game conference road swing. After taking the lead after the opening quarter, the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) struggled in the second quarter, and trailed by 15 at the half before ultimately falling 67-48.
Shelbi Patterson led the way with 13 points for the Prairie Stars.
The game opened up with the two teams trading buckets for the first five minutes before
Meredith Marti hit a three pointer to give the Prairie Stars a four point edge.
Chelsea Cross and
Michaela Jones hit back-to-back shots to again give UIS another four point advantage with under two minutes remaining in the first frame. The quarter ended with the Prairie Stars up 18-16 after UIS shot over 50 percent from the field.
The second quarter was a different story though, as the Prairie Stars scored just two more points before the half. Outscored by the Bulldogs 19-2 in the quarter, Truman State took a 15-point lead into the half after UIS made just 1-of-17 shot attempts in the quarter.
The Prairie Stars came back after the half with a 16-point third quarter, cutting the deficit to just 11 heading to the final ten minutes of play.
Truman State combatted the third with a 20-point fourth quarter though, the highest point total of the night, to take the game 67-48.
Ashley McHenry scored 11 points and added two steals while
Syerra Cunningham had a team high six rebounds.
UIS fell for the second consecutive game after the New Year, and now holds a 5-7 mark on the season and is 0-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. They will return home to take on Rockhurst on Thursday at 5:30 pm before taking on William Jewell on Saturday at 1 pm at home as well.
