ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The University of Illinois Springfield softball team dropped a pair of games at Lindenwood, 5-4 (10) and 3-1 (6), on Wednesday at the Lou Brock Complex. Game two was called short due to bad weather in the area.
The Prairie Stars plated runs in the first, fifth, eighth and 10th innings, but Lindenwood had an answer every time and eventually the game-winning one in the bottom of the 10th.
Lauren Hollinshead came around to score on
Ashli King's single in the first. Hollinshead reached on a walk, stole second and moved to third on a sac bunt.
The hosts scored two in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead, but UIS evened the score in its side of the fifth.
Jordyn Larsen brought home King for the 2-2 game. After a scoreless seventh, the game was sent to extra innings and used the international tiebreaker rule to start the inning with a runner at second base.
A leadoff sac bunt and a Lion miscue allowed UIS to score, but Lindenwood responded in the bottom of the eighth for the 3-3 score. UIS jumped out front again in the top of the 10th, but it was not enough as two runs crossed for the home team.
In game two, Lindenwood pushed runs across in the first, third and fifth innings. UIS got its long run in the fourth when
Molly Manietta hit an RBI-single allowing King to cross the plate.
UIS did not have a chance to even the score as the game was called due to lightening.
The Prairie Stars now resume conference play on Saturday and Sunday when they travel to Saint Joseph's and No. 10 Indianapolis.
