Home Runs Powers Stars to Split

RENSSELAER, Ind. – The University of Illinois Springfield softball team split in a pair of GLVC games at Saint Joseph's, losing 5-4 in 11 innings and responding with a 2-1 win in second game.

The Prairie Stars hit two solo home runs in the fourth and sixth innings as it took game two from the home team. Jordyn Amos hit the bomb first followed by Ashli King later in the game.

Taylor Bowlby pitched a one-run game with nine hits, no walks and three strikeouts.

In the first game, the two teams were mirror images of each other making it a 3-3 game after three complete. UIS tacked on its three runs in the first frame with an RBI single from Brittany Miller and a two-run homer from freshman Rachel Goff.

The Pumas added runs on the board in their side of the third when Tiffany Gibson sent a three-run homer to even the score.

UIS took its final lead of the game on a solo round tripper from Amos in the fourth. The hosts then tacked on their run in the bottom of the frame to knot the game at 4-all.

Neither team got anything going in the scheduled set of innings so it went to extra. For Saint Joseph's, pitcher Megan Schwartzengarber kept the Stars off the base paths in the extra innings. The Pumas scored the game-winning run on a throwing error.

Illinois Springfield got out of several jams over the course of the game as SJC stranded 15 runners on base. Schwartzengarber fanned 11 batters in the complete game, while giving up nine hits and no walks.

The Prairie Stars now travel to No. 10 Indianapolis for a Sunday twinbill. The games begin at 11 a.m. central time.
