One Run Pushes UIS Past No. 10 UIndy for Split

Foley fans 14 batters to take first game

INDIANAPOLIS - A four-hit shut out and an unearned run were keys to the University of Illinois Springfield softball team's 1-0 victory against No. 10 Indianapolis at Baumgartner Field on Sunday afternoon. The Greyhounds got the win in the first game, 6-0.

The Prairie Stars (25-15, 12-10 GLVC) scored in the third inning when two errors and two hit-by-pitches got a run across. Lauren Hollinshead reached on an error before stealing second and advancing on the second error of the inning. She came home with what would be the game-winner on a squeeze bunt from Jordyn Amos.

UIndy (30-8, 17-3 GLVC) tried to break up the shut out in the fifth and sixth, but came up empty. The Greyhounds tried to score a runner from first on a two-out double, but solid throws from the outfield beat the runner home.

After fanning 14 batters in the first inning, Morgan Foley earned the starting nod in the second game as well. She struck out nine in the second game and gave up just one hit, but was tagged with the loss. For UIS, Taylor Bowlby tossed a four-hit shutout with four strikeouts and one walk in her 16th win of the season. She is just one-shy of tying Alexandria Smith's single-season record for wins.

In game one, Foley gave up just one hit to Hollinshead on her way to her fifth shut out of the year. Taylor Russell hit a grand slam in the sixth, while two other runs were scored in the first and sixth, respectively.

The Prairie Stars take a break from GLVC play and head to Lincoln on Tuesday. The Stars then stay on the road for their final away weekend at Drury and Missouri S&T.
