SOMERS, Wis. - The Prairie Stars held the Rangers to just three hits on Sunday as the University of Illinois Springfield baseball team split a doubleheader with Wisconsin-Parkside, 6-2 and 1-2, at Oberbruner Field.
UIS (14-14 GLVC) is now tied for second in the GLVC with Bellarmine. The Prairie Stars travel to Bellarmine next weekend for a four-game series.
The Prairie Stars' pitching staff was dominant on Sunday, allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out 18 hitters.
In game one of the day, the Prairie Stars took an early lead when junior
Adam Warda (Skokie, Ill.) hit a home run over the left field fence, his third of the season. Two innings later, freshman
Michael Rothmund (Lombard, Ill.) made it a 2-0 game with a homer to left field. Rothmund leads the team with five bombs.
Junior
Jose Marin (Maturin, Venezuela) got the start for UIS and was effective over 5.2 innings of work. He allowed just one hit while striking out six.
The Rangers tied the game with runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The game went into extra innings as neither team could push across any runs until the 11th inning. The Prairie Stars used four hits and a UWP error to score four runs in the top of the inning. Senior
Kyle Schildroth (Aviston, Ill.) picked up his sixth win of the season after tossing 5.1 shutout innings.
In the second half of the doubleheader, UIS got another quality start from junior
Matt Farrington (Orland Park, Ill.). Farrington pitched 6.1 innings allowing just one hit and zero earned runs while striking out five.
The Prairie Stars opened the scoring in the top of the first. First baseman
Michael Rothmund singled to left field and after an error by the UWP left fielder,
Adam Warda came around to score.
The Rangers didn't manage a hit until a bunt single in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and nobody out, UWP's DJ Peltz hit a sacrifice fly to right field to tie the game. An error on the play by the UIS defense allowed the game-winning run to score giving the hosts a 2-1 win.
UIS is back in action for a midweek nonconference matchup with Missouri-St. Louis. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
