SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - A five-run second inning ignited the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons past the University of Illinois Springfield baseball team, 13-3, on a windy Wednesday at the UIS Baseball Field.
Junior
Gavin Collins (Camp Verde, Ariz.) got the start for the Prairie Stars and after breezing through the first inning, ran into trouble in the second.
A pair of singles and a fielding error gave the Tritons runners on second and third with nobody out. Two batters later, an errant throw on a ground ball allowed UMSL to take the lead, 1-0. Two walks and a wild pitch gave the visitors a 2-0 lead and the bases loaded. Back-to-back singles capped off the five-run frame for UMSL.
The Prairie Stars immediately started chipping away in the bottom half of the frame. After sophomore
Brooks Rohrman (Ft. Myers, Fla.) drew a one-out walk, junior
Jake Redlinger (Washington, Iowa) launched his third home run of the season over the fence in center field to make the score 5-2. The center fielder finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs-batted in.
UMSL maintained its 5-2 advantage into the sixth inning when it tacked on four more runs. The UMSL offense continued to produce with runs in the seventh and eighth innings to take a 13-2 lead.
The Prairie Stars got a run back in the bottom of the ninth when pinch-hitter
Kyle Doubet (Hanna City, Ill.) singled through the left side to bring home Rohrman.
A total of 12 pitchers threw on Wednesday, seven for UIS and five for UMSL.
UIS is tied for second place in the GLVC East Division standings with Bellarmine with just eight games left to play. The Prairie Stars travel to Bellarmine this weekend for a four-game series beginning on Saturday.
