ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team defeated the Maryville Saints, 6-2, and won the series, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at Weber Baseball Field.
The Prairie Stars are now 10-10 overall and 4-4 in conference play. UIS is currently in second place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division.
Junior
Max Biedrzycki (Bolingbrook, Ill.) earned his second win of the season on Sunday, pitching five innings and allowing two runs while striking out six. Senior
Kyle Schildroth (Aviston, Ill.) and junior
Jose Marin (Maturin, Venezuela) combined to throw four shutout innings in relief.
The Prairie Stars cranked out 12 hits on the day as four players collected at least two hits. Junior
Adam Warda (Skokie, Ill.) finished 3-for-3 at the plate with a RBI and a run scored.
UIS got on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the second. With runners on first and second and two out, junior
Ryan Walling (Spring Lake, Mich.) singled up the middle to score a run. Junior
Jake Redlinger (Washington, Iowa) came around to score in the same play after an error by the Maryville center fielder.
The hosts chipped away at the UIS lead with a run in the third and eventually tied the game with another run in the fifth.
In the top of the sixth frame, junior
Gabriel Acevedo (Portage, Ind.) broke the deadlock with his second home run of the season. The Prairie Stars added to their lead in the eighth and then tacked on two more in the ninth to seal the victory.
UIS gets a couple of days off before traveling to Macomb, Ill. to take on Western Illinois on Wednesday, March 25.
