Softball Takes Two from Quincy

Bowlby picks up two wins, third shut out

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Freshman Jordyn Larsen hit a walk-off single to give the University of Illinois Springfield softball team a 5-4 win in 12 innings before the Prairie Stars shut out Quincy, 5-0, in game two for the sweep in GLVC action.

Illinois Springfield moves to 5-1 in conference play and 18-5 overall, while the Hawks drop to an even 11-11 and a 2-4 mark in league play. The Prairie Stars have a tough task ahead of them on Sunday as Truman comes to town. The Bulldogs are a perfect 6-0 in the GLVC and 14-4 overall riding a 10-game winning streak entering the doubleheader.

In game one, UIS took an early lead when Lauren Hollinshead singled and stole second. The senior third baseman came around to score on Brittany Miller's single to centerfield. A ground out moved Trisha Faulkner, who ran for Miller, to second before coming around on Jordyn Amos' single to left field for the 2-0 lead.

Quincy responded with a home run in the second and another run scored in the third to tie the game. The Hawks then left five Prairie Stars stranded in the second, third and fourth.

The visiting team took the lead in the top of the fifth on a lead off home run followed by an RBI-out to score two runs and make it a 4-2 ball game. The home team had a different idea though.

Goff singled up the middle to start the fifth before coming around to score on a miscue by the pitcher on Larsen's at bat to pull UIS to within 4-3. In the next inning, a bunt single and a walk forced a Quincy pitching change as the game-winning run was at first base. A wild pitch from relief pitcher Tiffany Haribson moved the runners over in perfect position for a walk-off, but UIS was only able to cross one run on a sacrifice fly before a strikeout sent the game to extra innings.

Neither team could get anything going in the extras as the Prairie Stars stranded nine runners in the late frames. Bowlby fanned six of her eight batters in the extra innings and kept the Hawks at bay.

In the 12th, UIS once again got runners on with a single and a walk with two outs. Larsen then stepped to the plate to hit a blooper just past the infield and allow the game-winning run to come home and end the game.

Bowlby surrendered just five hits, one walk and a run in her eight innings of relief work. Harbison was tagged with the loss in 6.1 innings.

UIS struck early in the second game and never looked back. A lead off walk from Hollinshead followed by her 24th stolen base of the year put a runner in scoring position. She moved over on a ground out before Molly Manietta brought her home with a single. Goff followed with a single before Ashli King blasted a home run to center field for the 4-0 advantage.

In the second, Amos started things with a double to left center to force the Hawks to make a pitching change. It was short-sighted though as a wild pitch moved Amos to home and before advancing on a wild pitch. A ground out brought Amos home for the 5-0 lead.

Bowlby and Goff combined to throw a four-hit shut out and the Prairie Star defense made three double plays as only two Quincy players made it past first base.

King was 5-for-7 on the day with a double, home run and three walks.

UIS takes on Truman at the Land of Lincoln Softball complex on Sunday beginning at noon.
