SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The University of Illinois Springfield softball team powered its way past a previously undefeated Truman team with a 6-3 victory in game two at Land of Lincoln Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs grabbed the opening game win, 5-2, in eight innings.
Illinois Springfield moves to 19-6 on the season and 6-2 in the GLVC. The Prairie Stars snapped Truman's 11-game winning streak as it stands at 15-5 overall and 7-1 in league play.
For UIS, junior
Ashli King had a hot bat for the day as she hit .667 on 4-for-6 including a two-run home run and a double.

In the Prairie Stars' win, UIS struck in the first when
Lauren Hollinshead singled to open the game. She stole second before advancing on a sac bunt and then took home on a fielder's choice to second base. The Bulldogs' attempted the tag, but Hollinshead slid under it for the 1-0 lead.
With one still on and no outs, King smashed a home run to right center to score two runs and give UIS a 3-0 lead. Starting pitcher Kindra Henze then settled in and got the next two batters to end the inning.
UIS added what ended up being its insurance run in the second.
Amanda Gosbeth hit a two-out single to right center and stole second. Hollinshead then hit an RBI-single just past the second baseman.
Truman made it a one-run game in the sixth when two batters reached on hit-by-pitch. Designated player Devin Gudehus then crushed an 0-1 pitch over the left center fence for a 4-3 game.
The Prairie Stars tacked on two more runs to secure the split with the Bulldogs when King started the inning with a double and moved on a sac bunt. Freshman
Rachel Goff then sent a double down the left line to bring King home. A ground out moved Goff over before freshman
Jordyn Larsen singled to bring home the run.
Pitcher
Taylor Bowlby picked up her fifth win of the week in 5.0 innings with nine strikeouts.
Alexandria Smith earned her first save of the season in two innings of work as she did not allow a hit and surrendered just one walk. Henze was tagged with the loss after giving up 10 hits and six runs, while striking out three.
After four silent innings in game one, Truman struck first with a two-run homer in the fifth. The Prairie Stars then tied the game in the sixth. Miller hit a single bring Hollinshead home after she reached on a double. UIS added the tying run on a throwing error allowing what should have been a sacrifice bunt to come around to home.
In the eighth, Truman score the game-winning run after a single put the game-winning run at first base. A hit-by-pitch and walk ensued loaded the bases for pinch hitter Ashley Murphy to step up and slam a double to the fence and win the game for the Bulldogs.
Henze shut the Prairie Stars down in the seventh and eighth as she put them down in order to secure the victory. She pitched three innings of relief with no hits, runs or walks, while fanning three.
With the anticipation of rain in the forecast, UIS canceled its game against North Alabama originally scheduled for Tuesday. The Prairie Stars now take the next five days off to prepare for Bellarmine and nationally-ranked Southern Indiana on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
