SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - On an extremely wet day in Springfield, the University of Illinois Springfield softball team powered past Benedictine Springfield, 8-2, in game one before taking a 7-0 win in five innings in game two.
The two wins moves UIS to 16-5 on the season and now returns to conference play over the weekend. The Prairie Stars host Quincy on Saturday before welcoming Truman on Sunday. The doubleheaders are scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. at the Land of Lincoln Complex.
Freshman
Jordyn Larsen finished the day 5-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore
Taylor Bowlby batted and pitched in game two with a double and two runs scored. She also tossed three scoreless innings and struck out four batters. Bowlby combined with
Rachel Goff to pitch the combined no-hitter shut out.
In the first inning of game one,
Lauren Hollinshead came around to score after an errant throw to second reached the outfield. The senior is now 20-for-23 on stolen bases and has scored a team-best 19 runs.
UIS added to its lead when
Ashli King launched a home run over the left field fence for the 2-0 lead. The Prairie Stars tacked on three more runs in the fifth and sixth to take the win.
Benedictine pushed two across in the sixth inning when an attempt at a double play ended in an error and allowed runners to come around. Junior pitcher
Alexandria Smith kept things under control forcing the next two outs to end any more damage. Smith finished the game with one unearned run, six walks and eight strikeouts.
In game two, Bowlby singled followed by a double from Larsen to put two on.
Amanda Gosbeth then sent a single through the left side to score the two runners and start the UIS advantage.
The Prairie Stars added to their lead with a five-run fourth inning. Bowlby got things started with a double to left field before Larsen singled and stole second to once again be in scoring position. Senior
Chelsea Minor then added another single to score both runs and move to second on the attempt home. An error on a short hit ball to the pitcher put runners on the corners for Hollinshead who hit a well-placed single to left field to bring in two more runs and make it a 7-0 game.
Only three Bulldogs reached base, each on a walk. Bowlby moved to 9-2 on the season and Goff picked up her first save of the season.
UIS hit .434 for the day and recorded 14 RBI and seven doubles.
