ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The University of Illinois Springfield softball team stole one game from the fourth-ranked Missouri-St. Louis Tritons, 1-0, as
Taylor Bowlby tossed a complete game, one-hit shut out on Monday afternoon at the UMSL Softball Field. The Stars dropped a 10-0 decision in five innings in the first game of the day.
Bowlby allowed just one batter to reach base and recorded a season-best 10 strikeouts in the complete game. The shutout is the third of the season as the sophomore moves to 8-2 on the season.
The Prairie Stars scored their lone run of the game on two outs and the inning should have ended on a strikeout, but
Molly Manietta reached first due to a misplay by the catcher. Freshman
Rachel Goff then singled up the middle to move Manietta to second who was then replaced by sophomore
Trisha Faulkner. Faulkner then came around to score on a single from senior
Jordyn Amos. Two of UIS' four hits came in the second inning. Manietta and
Amanda Gosbeth mustered the other two hits for UIS.
Brittani Chapman earned the loss in the pitchers' duel. She threw a complete game with four hits, one unearned run and eight strikeouts. Katie Rutledge, who had two home runs in game one, was the lone Triton to record a hit.
In game one, UMSL scattered 10 runs across five innings including a four-run fifth inning. Hannah Perryman earned the win to move to 9-1 on the season with one hit, one walk and 12 strikeouts. Junior
Alexandria Smith was tagged with the loss to drop to 6-3.
