ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The University of Illinois Springfield softball team earned a sweep of Maryville, 5-2, and 11-3, on Sunday evening at Lindenwood Field.
The wins are the first two in GLVC action for first-year head coach
Shannon Nicholson and moves UIS to 13-4 on the season. Maryville drops to 4-13 on the year.
Senior
Lauren Hollinshead got things started for UIS with a lead off double before stealing third and advancing home on a throwing error. Hollinshead finished 4-for-7 on the day with two doubles and three runs scored.
The Prairie Stars added three more runs in the third off four hits. Freshman
Rachel Goff singled to begin the inning before moving over on a sac bunt. She then reached third on Hollinshead hit before both scored on
Chelsea Minor's single to right field.
Brittany Miller reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score on
Ashli King's hit to right for the 4-0 lead.
A two-out double from Goff followed by an error allowed UIS to take a 5-0 advantage. Goff finished 3-for-4 on the day.
Maryville pushed runs across in the fifth and sixth, but it was all they could muster as UIS took game one.
Junior
Alexandria Smith tossed a complete game to move to 6-2. She gave up six hits, two runs (one earned) and four walks, while striking out five. Danielle Williams was tagged with the loss after giving up six hits and five runs (three earned) in 3.2 innings of work to drop to 0-3.
In game two, UIS got its bats going in the second inning. The Prairie Stars scored seven runs on seven hits and one error led by a three-run home run by junior
Molly Manietta.
UIS added three more runs to its lead in the fourth and another in the seventh. The Saints got on the board in the fifth and sixth, but Goff came in after the third run was scored to shut down the home team and secure the sweep. Goff replaced
Taylor Bowlby who earned the win, giving up 10 hits, three runs and three walks. She fanned five batters to move to 7-2.
The Prairie Stars now turn their attention to No. 4 UMSL on Monday. The Tritons are coming off of four straight victories including two perfect games tossed by Hannah Perryman against McKendree and Lake Superior State.
