LIBERTY, Mo. - The University of Illinois Springfield men's tennis team picked up a 9-0 win against GLVC foe William Jewell before dropping a 7-2 decision to No. 16 Northwest Missouri State on Sunday afternoon at the Clay View Country Club.

In the morning match, UIS swept the Cardinals. Freshman Grant Fitzsimmons (Springfield, Ill.) shut out his opponent, 8-0, in the No. 6 singles spot. He paired with Aksell Dogan in the No. 3 doubles spot with an 8-5 victory. In the No. 1 position Hayden Esker (Effingham, Ill.) paired with Cole Buehnerkemper (Effingham, Ill.) for an 8-6 win. Santiago Pedraza (Spain) and Gerard Carpinell (Spain) won, 8-6, in the No. 3 doubles spot.

In singles, Carpinell grabbed a 6-2, 6-3 win in the No. 1 position and doubles partner, Pedraza, won 8-6 in No. 4 singles. Buehnerkemper won 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot and Esker defeated his opponent, 6-4, 7-6. Pradeep Ravisankar closed out the singles win with 8-4.

In the second match of the day, Pedraza and Carpinell fought to a 9-7 win in the No. 2 doubles position against Fin Glowick and Josef Altmann. Carpinell then battled in singles play with a 6-3, 1-6, 10-8 in the No. 1 spot.

The Prairie Stars now have more than a week to prepare UMSL when UIS returns home to Springfield's Washington Park on March 12.
