LAS VEGAS, NV - Seniors
Jamall Millison (Bolingbrook, Ill.) and
Davi Austin (Newark, NJ) combined to score 32 points to lead the University of Illinois Springfield men's basketball team past Findlay, 82-80, Saturday night to close out the D2 Vegas Showdown.
The Prairie Stars earned their first win of the season after dropping the season-opener on Friday. UIS shot 50 percent from the field and connected on nine three-pointers.
Millison and Bolingbrook scored 16 points a-piece to lead the Springfield squad. Austin was 6-for-8 from the floor while Millison added four rebounds and a team-high five assists. Freshman
Zach Steinberg (Wildwood, Mo.) was perfect in the game, knocking down all of his shots including a pair of threes. He finished with 10 points. Junior
Paxton Harmon (Warsaw, Ill.) chipped in with 14 points in his second start for the Prairie Stars.
UIS didn't miss a shot until the 16:41 minute-mark. After falling behind early on, five straight points from
Davi Austin tied the game at 14 at the first media timeout of the game. Findlay pulled ahead and maintained a slight advantage for the next several minutes, eventually taking a six-point lead on a three pointer from Martyce Kimbrough with 10:12 left in the half.
A jumper by Millison at the 7:28 mark kick started a 16-2 run for the Prairie Stars over the next six minutes to give UIS a 35-27 lead. In danger of losing control of the game, Findlay responded, scoring five quick points to pull within three, 35-32. UIS took a 40-38 lead into the break.
The second period started just like the first as the teams traded buckets. The Prairie Stars began to take control midway through the period. Three three-point plays including a three pointer from Millison, an old fashioned three point play by redshirt freshman
Vince Walker (Ankeny, Iowa) and another three-ball from
Paxton Harmon extended the UIS lead to 11, 64-53.
Over the next eight minutes, Findlay clawed its way back into the game. A pair of free throws at the 2:28 mark made the score 74-72 in favor of the Prairie Stars. Senior
Davi Austin stepped up when it mattered most Saturday night as he converted a layup with 1:59 left in the game and a three pointer on the very next possession to push the lead back to seven, 79-72. UIS iced the game late and picked up its first win of the season, 82-80.
The Prairie Stars return to Springfield for their home opener against Robert Morris Springfield on Wednesday, Nov. 18.
