Prairie Stars Take a Set from McKendree, Fall 3-1 to Bearcats

LEBANON, IL - After taking the first set, 25-20, McKendree swept the final three sets, 25-19, 25-10 and 25-13 to defeat the University of Illinois Springfield volleyball team 3-1 Tuesday night at the Melvin Price Convovation Center.

UIS Top Performers
  • Senior Heather Smack (St. Louis, Mo.): recorded a team-high eight kills in 27 attempts. She also had two block assists.
  • Freshman Emma Burkle (Crystal Lake, Ill.) finished with seven kills and a block assist.
  • Junior Kayla Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill.) collected a game-high 20 digs.
  • Senior Rachelle Wiegand (Hecker, Ill.) and sophomore Lexi Hall (Champaign, Ill.) finished with 13 and 12 assists, respectively.

How It Happened
  • The Prairie Stars took advantage of three McKendree errors and a pair of service aces to take a 5-3 lead in the first set, which they didn't surrender for the rest of the set.
  • With the score tied at 3-3, UIS opened up a 10-3 run to make the score 13-6. The visitors extended the lead to eight, 18-10 after four errors by the host Bearcats. A 4-0 run by McKendree cut the deficit to four but back-to-back kills by the Prairie Stars' Heather Smack and junior Nora Palermo (West Chicago, Ill.) cut the rally short. UIS held on to take the first set 25-20.
  • The second set was tight early on and the Prairie Stars took a 15-10 lead after another kill by Smack. With a four-point lead, 17-13, the Bearcats went on a 6-0 run to take control of the set. The teams traded points towards the end of the set and the Bearcats held on to take it, 25-19.
  • With the match tied 1-1, McKendree used multiple runs to outpace the Prairie Stars in the final two sets, 25-10 and 25-13.
