Prairie Stars Earn Scoreless Draw with UMSL

SPRINGFIELD, IL - Senior Paige Polonus (Plainfield, Ill.) grabbed five saves to hold the high-flying UMSL Tritons scoreless as the University of Illinois Springfield women's soccer team earned a scoreless draw with UMSL Sunday at Kiwanis Stadium.

UIS Top Performers
  • Paige Polonus: picked up five saves to record her sixth shutout of the season in her final game at Kiwanis Stadium.
  • Taylor Mraz (Crystal Lake, Ill.): ran up and down the left side of field and created several scoring chances for UIS.
  • Sam Boettjer (Spring Grove, Ill.): came off the bench for the Prairie Stars on the wing and nearly scored the game-winner in overtime.
  • The back line: Sophomores Sam Morin (Lake in the Hills, Ill.), Regina Bolin (Kansas City, Mo.), Madisyn Coudriet (Chesterton, Ind.) and junior Nikki Auble (Plainfield, Ill.) held the Tritons scoreless for just the second time this season.

How It Happened
  • The Tritons entered Sunday's game on an eight-game winning streak but struggled to create quality chances in the first half. The Prairie Stars, behind goalkeeper Paige Polonus had all the answers for the Tritons attack.
  • The best chance for UMSL in the first half came 14 minutes into the game. Cassie McFadden's shot was headed for the right corner but Polonus made a great diving save to deny the goal.
  • The Prairie Stars took eight shots in the game but did not put any shots on target.
  • In the second half, Taylor Mraz nearly put the hosts ahead when she beat her defender to the end line and played a ball back across the six yard box that beat the UMSL keeper went over the goal.
  • Polonus was brilliant down the stretch, denying the Tritons four times in the second period. UMSL also hurt themselves as they  failed to put several great chances on target.
  • In the overtime periods, both teams had golden opportunities to put the game away. The Prairie Stars nearly took advantage of the UMSL keeper's first mistake of the day when she dropped the ball but Sam Boettjer's effort went right of the post.
  • In the second overtime period, UMSL Miriam Taylor found herself free with just Polonus to beat but her shot went over the bar as the game ended in a draw.

  • The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Prairie Stars as they travel to Truman State and Quincy, two of the top three teams in the GLVC, next weekend.
