SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - A 16-2 run over a 10-minute stretch in the second half gave Quincy the cushion it needed to defeat the University of Illinois Springfield women's basketball team 57-48 Thursday evening at the Recreation and Athletic Center.
The Prairie Stars trailed 33-24 coming out of halftime, but quickly trimmed the deficit to just one with an 11-2 run to make the score 38-37. Sophomore
Syerra Cunningham (Beach Park, Ill.) scored four of her eight points during the run. Foul trouble limited her to just 17 minutes of action but she finished with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting, four rebounds and one block.
A pair of free throws from Quincy's Tori Kuhn started a 16-2 run from the 15:21 to the 4:46 minute mark. Junior
Leslie Hairston's (Glendale, Ariz.) bucket with 11:39 to go in the game was UIS' only points during the stretch.
The Prairie Stars chipped away at the visitors 54-39 lead, pulling within 10, 55-45, after back-to-back fast break layups from
Caroline Kelty (River Forest, Ill.) and
Jessica Warren (University Park, Ill.). A three-pointer from Kelty with 37 seconds left made the score 55-48, but Quincy iced the game away for the 57-48 victory. It was their first GLVC win of the season.
Jessica Warren played arguably her best game of the season for the Prairie Stars, leading the team with 10 points while grabbing 11 rebounds and blocking 3 shots. She was 4-for-5 from the field and dished out two assists. Freshman
Shelbi Patterson (Indianpolis, Ind.) added nine points and two steals for the hosts.
The Prairie Stars are back in action on Saturday to host Truman State at 1 p.m.
