INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Junior
Jamall Millison (Bolingbrook, Ill.) scored a game-high 17 points in the University of Illinois Springfield men's basketball team's 74-57 loss to No. 1 Indianapolis Saturday afternoon at Nicoson Hall.
The Prairie Stars went toe-to-toe with the top-ranked Greyhounds in the first period. UIS took a 4-3 lead after a pair of free throws from junior
JJ Cravatta (Streator, Ill.) at the 16:47 minute-mark. UIndy responded with back-to-back three balls to take an 8-4 lead, which it held for the remainder of the game.
The hosts extended the lead to as many as 10 in the period, but the Prairie Stars didn't go away. UIS went 15-for-16 from the charity stripe in the period. Sophomore
Mark Weems (Chicago, Ill.) led the squad at the break with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting.
A three-pointer from Millison with six seconds left in the half cut the deficit to just three, 36-33, going into halftime.
In the second stanza, UIndy used a 7-0 run to increase its lead to double-digits, 46-35, just before the first media timeout. Senior
Dylan Sparkman (East Peoria, Ill.) ended the drought with a traditional three-point play to cut the lead to eight. After the Greyhounds knocked down another three, Millison connected on back-to-back triples, two of his five in the game, to keep the visitors within seven, 51-44.
Over the next three minutes, top-ranked UIndy took control of the game with a 10-3 run, in which UIS turned the ball over four times, to take a 61-47 lead at the 10:13 minute-mark. The Greyhounds increased their advantage to as many as 18 points down the stretch, eventually winning 74-57.
Millison led the way for UIS with 17 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the floor. All five of his field goals were three pointers. Weems was the only other player in double-figures for the visitors with 10 points. Sparkmand added nine points and seven rebounds and fellow senior
Kentrell King (Chicago, Ill.) tacked on eight points on 3-of-4 shooting.
Four players scored in double-figures for the Greyhounds led by Jordan Loyd and Brennan McElroy with 15 points each.
The Prairie Stars are back in action next week to host Bellarmine and Southern Indiana.
