Jessica Warren (University Park, Ill.) scored a career-high 20 points in the University of Illinois Springfield women's basketball team's 101-82 loss to No. 1 Lewis Saturday afternoon at the Neil Carey Arena.
Warren finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot. It was the third most made field goals by a Prairie Star in a game this season. Junior
Jameeshia Armstrong (Chicago, Ill.) tied a career-high with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting while fellow Chicago-native
Makeba Elliott set a career-mark with 15 points, making six of her seven attempts. Sophomore
Caroline Kelty (River Forest, Ill.) rounded out the double-digit scoring efforts for the Prairie Stars with 14 points.
UIS shot 53 percent (35-66) from the floor, its second-most makes and second-best shooting percentage of the season. Lewis outrebounded the Prairie Stars, 23-12, in the first half and 39-32 in the game. UIS is now 0-6 when outrebounded by its opponent.
It was a tale of two halves for the Prairie Stars. Lewis used a 24-8 run midway through the first half to take a commanding 33-15 lead at the 10:15 minute-mark. The Flyers shot a blistering 63.4 percent from the floor in the period. The conference's leading scorer, Jamie Johnson, scored 22 points in the first period and finished with 29. A 6-1 run capped by back-to-back jumpers from Kelty cut the deficit to 13 with 8:55 remaining. The top-ranked hosts responded by scoring the game's next seven points and closed out the half on a 30-14 run to make the score 64-35 into the break. It was the most points allowed by UIS in a half this season. The Prairie Stars shot 45 percent with eight turnovers.
In the second stanza, the Flyers maintained a 30-point advantage for much of the period despite the fact that UIS shot nearly 61 percent (20-33) from the floor.
Jessica Warren scored 18 of her 20 points after halftime and was the only player to score in the double-figures in the second half. The Prairie Stars ended the game on an 11-4 run to cut the Lewis lead to 19, 101-82. UIS outscored the Flyers 47-37 in the second period. The Prairie Stars' 82 points is the most points scored against Lewis this season.
The GLVC's leading rebounder, Mariah Brawner-Henley, scored 24 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Lewis is now 17-0 and 7-0 in conference play.
UIS is back in action on Monday when McKendree comes to town. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
