SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - One goal was all Wisconsin-Parkside needed as the University of Illinois Springfield women's soccer team battled with the No. 14 Rangers for 90 minutes but came up short, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Kiwanis Stadium.
The game started with a bang as the visitors drew a penalty on their first possession of the game. On the ensuing kick, UIS goalkeeper
Paige Polonus (Plainfield, Ill.) made one her nine saves on the day to deny the Rangers, but Parkside's Emily Konior picked up the rebound and fired home to make the score 1-0.
Polonus kept the Prairie Stars in the game with two more saves in the next five minutes of play.
In the 13th minute, UIS had one of its best chances to score. Freshman midfielder

Falyn Lockenour (New Berlin, Ill.) corner and sent the one-time shot towards the goal but Parkside's Mallory Geurts made the save.
The Prairie Stars threatened to score again in the 25th minute. Senior
Ashley Surface (Alto Loma, Calif.) stole the ball off a Rangers' defender and let loose a shot but Geurts was there again for the save. Wisconsin-Parkside controlled the rest of the half and outshot UIS 13-2, but the Prairie Stars' defense held fast as the teams went into the locker room with the score 1-0.
After the break, the Rangers picked up where they left off as the hosts struggled to create chances offensively. Freshman
Kaylan Mills (Oswego, Ill.) found space to shoot in the 55th minute but missed the target, the team's only shot in the half..
The Prairie Stars' back line hung tough throughout the second period and Polonus collected four more saves as the Rangers held on to win 1-0.
UIS hits the road for its next two GLVC games, traveling to Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's next weekend.
