SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Freshman
Regina Bolin (Kansas City, Mo.) netted her first career goal for the Prairie Stars as the University of Illinois Springfield women's soccer team played the Lewis Flyers to a 2-2 draw Friday night at Kiwanis Stadium.
The Prairie Stars notched their first goal in conference play this season in the 14th minute when freshman midfielder
Alysa Manwill (St. Louis, Mo.) found senior
Kim Tokarski (Hobart, Ind.) on the counterattack. Tokarski evaded one defender and then fired the ball past the keeper to score her third goal of the season and give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Junior
Paige Polonus (Plainfield, Ill.) was busy from the first whistle, stopping two shots in the first minute of the game from Lewis' Lauren Grady and Maggie Moran. The flurry continued in the sixth minute when Grady found space around the 18-yard box and fired a shot that bounced off the crossbar. The Prairie Stars settled into the game and took the lead in the 14th minute on Tokarski's strike.
The teams battled for control of the midfield for the next 20 minutes, with only three errant shots taken in that time. In the 32nd minute, however, when Lewis substitue Jennie Coughlon headed a Jessica Chavez cross into the left corner to tie the game. Coughlon came onto the field in the 28th minute of play.
UIS'
Paige Polonus bounced right back after the goal, making three more saves before the end of the period. The Prairie Stars earned a free kick in the final third in the 43rd minute and took advantage as Bolin got to the ball in a crowd of players and finished the goal from six yards out.
UIS held a 2-1 lead for 15 minutes of the second half until Lewis' Grady converted on one of her six attempts in the game to draw the Flyers even, 2-2. Both squads pressed, looking for the decisive goal but neither side could finish. Lewis threatened in the final minutes of regulation but Polonus kept the hosts alive with a save in the 89th minute. Tokarski responded with a shot in the final seconds but the Flyer's Mara Bennett made the save.
In overtime, each side produced a single shot and was unable to find the breakthrough. In the second period of extra time, Polonus came up big for the hosts, stopping a pair of shots at the 105 minute mark to preserve the tie.
The Prairie Stars are back in action on Sunday against Wisconsin-Parkside. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
