ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The hot-hitting Lewis Flyers downed the University of Illinois Springfield volleyball team, 3-0 (-19, -11, -14), on Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena in GLVC action.
Just missing double-digit kills, senior
Shelby Geers (Urbana, Ill.) led the team with nine kills, while sophomore
Becca Stoczynski (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) was strong on the attack, hitting a team-best .462 with seven kills on 13 attacked with just one miscue.
Lewis (21-6, 13-4 GLVC) hit .422 for the match which was aided by double-figure kill totals from Morgan Cebula (17), Aly Schneider (12) and Kim Vertin (11). The Flyers had 50 kills on 102 attempts with just seven errors.
In set one, the Prairie Stars (10-17, 2-15) kept fighting against the home squad as they tied the match six times - the final at 11-all. The Flyers then sparked a 10-5 lead to swing the frame in their favor and win the opening set. UIS recorded a game-high 14 kills, while Lewis had 15.
The remainder of the match went to Lewis, who sits at second in the East Division in league action. The Flyers limited UIS to just six kills in the second stanza and despite the Prairie Stars rebound in the final frame, it was not enough as the hosts went on to score a match-best 18 kills to close out the game.
Illinois Springfield wraps up its season against UW-Parkside on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Somers, Wis.
