JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Behind three double-figure scorers, led by junior
Jamall Millison, the University of Illinois Springfield men's basketball team moved to 3-0 on the season as the Prairie Stars downed Lincoln University, 72-67, at Jason Arena on Monday evening.
Millison (Bolingbrook, Ill.) topped the team with 18 points, shooting 5-for-11 from the floor with three long balls and 5-for-6 outing from the line. Sophomore
Mark Weems (Chicago) had his third straight double-figure outing with 15 points, nine coming from the line. He also grabbed a team-best six rebounds and dished out three helpers. Freshman
Vince Walker (Ankeny, Iowa) wrapped up the double-digit scorers with 11 points, going 4-for-9 including three from behind the arc.
The Prairie Stars fell behind early and allowed the hosts to take a 5-4 lead by the first media timeout. The teams then traded baskets before a lay in from senior
Dylan Sparkman (East Peoria, Ill.) started a 15-3 run to give UIS a lead it never relinquished. A free throw from junior
Davi Austin (Newark, N.J.) put UIS in front, 30-16, its biggest lead of the first half with 4:57 left in the frame.
UIS shot 48 percent in the opening frame, while the Blue Tigers went just 8-for-31 from the floor for a 25 percent clip.
In the second half, Lincoln got as close as eight in the early goings, but the Prairie Stars responded by ballooning their lead to 18 on a triple from Millison at the 10:40 mark.
Late in the game, the hosts chipped away at the double-digit lead and used a 14-2 run to pull within three, 65-62 with just 47 seconds left in the game. Despite the Blue Tigers hitting some late baskets, UIS used a 7-for-8 from the line outing down the stretch to secure its third straight victory.
For the game, UIS shot a 43 percent clip on 24-for-55 from the floor and went 17-for-23 from the line to help make the difference in the game as Lincoln took went just 6-for-9 from the charity stripe. The Blue Tigers were 18-for-30 shooting in the second half, but it could not make up the difference from the Prairie Stars makes at the line.
Victor Scott paced Lincoln with 21 points, sinking five triples, while Josh Buie tallied 20 points on 8-for-15 from the floor. Mike Smith also scored in double figures with 14 points.
The Prairie Stars now turn their attention to another MIAA foe when they travel to Lindenwood on Wednesday. Game time is set for 6 p.m. in St. Charles, Mo.
