OAKLAND CITY, Ind. - The University of Illinois Springfield battled through five sets and came out on the winning side as the Prairie Stars won 3-2 (16-25, 25-17, 26-24, 20-25, 15-13) at Oakland City on Tuesday.
Junior
Nikki Madoch (Algonquin, Ill.) and sophomore
Ashley Beaton (Wildwood, Mo.) tallied a team-best 11 kills each and hit an identical .250 on the night. Senior
Shelby Geers (Urbana, Ill.) then added 10 kills of her own, while classmate
Haley Maxwell (Windsor,Ill.) put down nine kills.
It was a block party as well for Madoch who recorded her first double-double of the season. In addition to her 11 kills she tallied 11 block assists with six digs. Beaton also recorded a double-double with 18 digs to go with her kill total. Both setters had double-doubles with junior
Rachelle Wiegand (Redbud, Ill.) had 19 assists and 12 digs, while freshman
Lexi Hall dished out 33 assists and dug up 11 balls from the floor.
On the defensive side, sophomore
Kayla Katarzynski dug up 31 balls, while sophomore
Becca Stoczynski (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) recorded a career-best 16 digs.
As a team, the Prairie Stars hit .215 with 53 total kills on 149 swings with 21 errors.
Illinois Springfield now turns its attention back to conference play as Bellarmine and Southern Indiana come to town. Game time with the Knights is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, while game time on Saturday is 3 p.m.
