RENSSELAER, Ind. -Â The Prairie Stars picked up their first GLVC win this season as the University of Illinois Springfield men's soccer team shut out Saint Joseph's, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Joseph L. Minielli Memorial Field.
UIS (3-7, 1-7 GLVC) netted goals on either side of halftime as the team scored its first goals on the road in conference play. Redshirt-freshman
Nathan Kingstad (Winchester, Ill.) bagged his first goal this season in the 43rd minute. After a shot from junior
Bryan Lucas (O'Fallon, Ill.) was deflected, Kingstad picked up the loose ball and found the back of the net to make the score 1-0.
Just three minutes into the second half, the Prairie Stars doubled their advantage when redshirt-junior
Tyler Stenzel (Gurnee, Ill.) won possession near the hosts' goal and didn't miss, scoring his first goal of the year.
The Prairie Stars went on the attack from the first whistle, earning a corner kick in the second minute of play. Six minutes later, Stenzel found space for one of his game-high six shots, all of which were on-goal, but the Pumas' Lewis Jones was there for the save. The midfield captain rattled off two more shots in the 13th minute but Jones stopepd each of them.
Freshman goalkeeper
Kyle Hamilton (Bethalto, Ill.) was solid in the net for UIS, stopping all four shots that came his way, two in each half.
After taking the lead in the 43rd minute on Kingstad's goal, the Prairie Stars threatened to make it 2-0 in the 45th minute but freshman
Brent Heinlein's (Edwardsville, Ill.) shot hit the post as the teams went into the break with the score 1-0.
Stenzel's goal in the 48th minute increased the UIS lead to 2-0, and the visitors continued to press. The visitors forced a pair of saves from the Pumas' keeper at the 58 minute mark when sophomore
Dylan Stockman (Peoria, Ill.) and Stenzel found space to shoot. UIS outshot Saint Joseph's 16-9 in the game.
Hamilton made a pair of saves including one in the 73rd minute to keep the clean sheet.
The Prairie Stars are back in action at Kiwanis Stadium this Friday as they host Rockhurst on Homecoming night.
