NDIANAPOLIS – Host Indianapolis sprinted past the University of Illinois Springfield volleyball team, 3-0 (25-8, 25-12, 25-17) Saturday afternoon in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center.
Senior
Shelby Geers (Urbana, Ill.) hit a team-best .455 with six kills on 11 attempts. Juniors
Nikki Madoch (Algonquin, Ill.) and
Heather Smack (St. Louis, Ill.) each recorded four kills. Sophomore
Kayla Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill.) dug up 10 balls, while freshman
Lexi Hall (Champaign, Ill.) dished 12 assists on the Prairie Stars' 19 total kills.
The Greyhounds came out on fire, hitting .525 as a team in the opening set with 15 kills and one error on 25 swings. The momentum continued to throughout the match as UIndy hit .441 and .243 in the following two sets.
UIS was able to keep the final set close at 13-13 before UIndy sparked a 9-2 run to push the set back in its favor and secure the sweep. The Prairie Stars forced a match-high seven errors in the final set, but the Greyhounds still hit above .200.
Hailey Brown led the Hounds with 13 kills, while Becca Lira also reached double-figures with 10 kills.
Illinois Springfield looks to rebound against a non-confernce opponent in Oakland City on Tuesday, Oct. 7. First serve is set for 6 p.m. in Oakland City, Ind.
