Shelby Geers topped the University of Illinois Springfield volleyball team as the Prairie Stars dropped a 3-1 (25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 25-12) decision at Missouri S&T on Sunday afternoon.
Geers (Urbana, Ill.) rebounded from just four kills on Saturday to smack down 14 total against the Miners, while also stopping five block assists. Junior
Nikki Madoch (Algonquin, Ill.) joined her in double figures with 10 kills. Sophomore
Ashley Beaton (Wildwood, Mo.) narrowly missed a double-double with 10 digs and eight kills.

Kayla Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill.) matched her career high with 37 digs. The last time she dug up 37 was last season against William Jewell. Junior
Rachelle Wiegand (Redbud, Ill.) recorded her third double-double of the season with 15 assists and a second-best 10 digs.
Set one was a back and forth affair until the Miners went on a 7-3 run to go ahead 15-10. The Prairie Stars clawed back to come within one, 22-21 and 24-23, but Missouri S&T sent back kills each time to secure the win.
The second stanza featured 17 tie scores and four lead changes, the final one coming in Missouri S&T's favor at 22-21, with back-to-back kills. UIS got back to within on a kill from sophomore
Nora Palermo (West Chicago, Ill.), but the Miners hit down two straight kills to take the second set.
UIS rattled off four straight points to start the third set to hold the lead from the start. Three kills from Geers during a 6-3 run gave UIS a 10-5 advantage. The momentum stayed in Illinois Springfield's favor as the Miners came within one, 23-22, but kills from Geers and Beaton closed out the set to send it to four.
The Miners buckled down and had no issues in the final set, jumping out to a 15-6 lead and not looking back. Missouri S&T held UIS to a negative hitting percentage, while
tallying a .333 hitting percentage.
Krista Haslag topped Missouri S&T with 20 kills on 30 attempts with just one error, while teammate Gracey Moon recorded 11 kills. Setter Allie Plunk had a double-double with 47 kills and 10 digs.
The Prairie Stars stay on the road for another GLVC contest when UIS travels to McKendree on Tuesday, Oct. 28. Match time is set for 7 p.m. in Lebanon.
