ROLLA, Mo. - The Miners went ahead early and never looked back as the University of Illinois Springfield women's soccer team fell to Missouri S&T, 2-0, on Friday.
Missouri S&T opened the scoring in the third minute of action when Leah Camery tucked home a rebound to make the score 1-0.
The Prairie Stars threatened to equalize just minutes later but freshman
Alysa Manwill's (St. Louis, Mo.) shot was stopped by Miners' keeper Kaitlyn Deister. Junior
Paige Polonus (Plainfield, Ill.) kept UIS close in the early going with back-to-back saves at the 12-minute mark. She finished with four saves in the half and six in the game.
UIS went on the offensive at the end of the period, creating two shots and a corner kick in the final three minutes. Junior
Eileen Kenny (Tinley Park, Ill.) recorded the Prairie Stars' only other shot-on-goal in the game in the 45th minute but Deister was there for the save.
S&T struck again early in the second stanza, capitalizing on the team's only corner of the half. UIS fought to get back into the game for the final 40 minutes. The Prairie Stars found space for six shots but struggled to find the mark. In the 76th minute, Manwill laced a shot that hit the post. Senior
Kim Tokarski's (Hobart, Ind.) picked up the rebound but her shot strayed wide.
The Prairie Stars look to snap their three-game skid on Sunday against Drury. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
