Raul Quevedo is in his fifth year as a member of the University of Illinois Springfield coaching staff in 2021-22, and his third season in charge of the program.
In 2020-21, Quevedo had the most talented men’s and women’s teams in program history. The men’s team went 11-4 on the season, including a 4-2 GLVC mark. The Prairie Stars made program history by advancing to the GLVC Tournament Semifinals, and earning its first bid to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
The women’s team in 2020-21 won nearly 80 percent of their on-court matches, and compiled a 10-4 record on the year despite having just four players. UIS went 4-2 in GLVC action and advanced to the conference tournament.
Quevedo coached four all-conference players, including a record three members of the women’s team making the all-GLVC squad. The men’s team finished the year ranked 37
th in the nation, its highest ranking in program history.
Quevedo’s teams also excelled in the classroom, including the women’s program having a 3.97 GPA, the highest mark among any sport in the GLVC, and the men’s team having the best mark among UIS men’s teams with a 3.70.
In 2019-20, Quevedo was the Interim Head Coach and oversaw all aspects of the program, including player development, recruiting, academic success, travel, and coaching staff management. UIS’s men’s team was off to a 5-2 start before its season was cut short, and the women’s team went 3-3.
Quevedo came to UIS in 2017 as an assistant coach. UIS improved its record in each of his two seasons as an assistant coach. In 2018-19, both teams were ranked among the top-50 teams in NCAA Division II, and just missed out on NCAA Tournament berths. The men’s team finished that year with a 13-5 record, while the women’s team went 14-5 and advanced to the GLVC Tournament Semifinals.
Quevedo played competitive tennis in Spain for over 10 years. He was ranked in the top-25 in under-18 tennis, and won over 20 junior tournaments. He played four seasons at Young Harris College, and set a program record with 115 total wins.
Other tennis coaching jobs for Quevedo include being an Assistant Director for Tennis Europe in the Summer of 2018 and 2019, a tennis coach at Carmel Valley Tennis Camp in 2015, and a tennis professional at Tennis Club de la Salut in Barcelona, Spain from 2010-13.
Quevedo graduated from Young Harris with a Bachelor of Science in Business and Public Policy in 2017. He graduated Summa Cum Laude, was a CoSIDA Academic All-American, and earned the PBC Elite 15 award. He earned a Master of Business Administration in 2020 from UIS, and graduated in the top 1% of the graduating class.
