Michael Rothmund is in his second season as an assistant coach on the University of Illinois Springfield baseball team in 2021. He returns to UIS after being one of the top hitters in program history from 2015-18.

Rothmund assists with the hitters, and has recruiting responsibilities. He will also assist with camps and team travel.
In his first season as a coach at UIS in 2020, he helped UIS have a 10-4 record in the shortened season. Rothmund played a role in the UIS hitters leading the nation in home runs per game, and had top-15 marks nationally in scoring, batting average, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage.
Rothmund played in 168 games and started 157 contests in his UIS playing career. He holds the program’s career records with 194 hits, 53 home runs, 175 RBI, and 408 total bases. He batted .327 in his career with a .688 slugging percentage and a .401 on-base percentage. He also collected 148 runs, 41 doubles, and seven doubles.

Rothmund was a three-time all-GLVC performer, including a first-team honoree in 2017 and 2018. He was a two-time all-region selection, and earned third-team All-American honors as a senior.

Rothmund was a part of the team’s major turnaround, going from 22 wins in 2015 to the best record in program history in 2018. In his senior year, the Prairie Stars went 47-9 and won the GLVC Regular Season Championship. UIS earned its first NCAA postseason berth, and hosted the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament.

Rothmund is originally from Lombard, Ill., and attended Willowbrook High School.Â
