UIS Men's Soccer tied with Lincoln on Saturday, at Kiwanis Stadium, playing to a scoreless draw with the No. 11-ranked team in the country. The Prairie Stars were outshot 18-2 without conceding.
UIS absorbed Lincoln's first-half pressure and kept the match scoreless, with
Kevin Kardel making a save in the 24th minute and two Lincoln shots hitting the woodwork. The Prairie Stars earned a corner in the 27th minute, but neither team would find the back of the net before halftime.
The Prairie Stars kept Lincoln off the board through sustained second-half pressure. Kardel was credited with six saves after the break, and the UIS also had a team save during a stretch in which Lincoln generated four corners and four shots from 60:09 to 70:20.
Robin Lemke Bergseth had Illinois Springfield's shot in the half, and the Prairie Stars earned corners at 52:24 and 86:42.
The game was preceded by a ceremony recognizing the program's 11 seniors.Â
"Overall, I thought it was a fair result. Going into the game, we knew what Lincoln's game plan was, and we knew it would be a battle without the ball. The lads' defending was superb today. On the counterattack, we always looked a threat and could have been a little better in the final third. I also want to recognize our seniors, who have given everything to this team and this university." said head coach
Graham Shaw.
Up next, the Prairie Stars travel to Drury in Springfield, Mo., on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
