Illinois Springfield fell to Quincy 4-2 on Wednesday. The Prairie Stars were outshot 18-7 overall and 6-3 in shots on goal, with six of their seven shots coming after halftime.
UIS cut into an early two-goal deficit in the first half when
Jacob Shaw scored off
Carter Downen's assist at 11:12, bringing the score to 2-1. Quincy, which had scored at 5:00 and 7:54, added another goal at 32:51, and the Prairie Stars went into halftime down 3-1.
Shaw scored again for UIS at 64:07, assisted by
Leo Sanches and
Cameron Frye, after Quincy had moved ahead 4-1 less than a minute earlier. The Prairie Stars then withstood a late Quincy stretch that included three shots and two corner kicks from 81:14 to 88:03 without conceding.
Liam McLean hit the left woodwork in the 90th minute before the match ended 4-2.
Kevin Kardel appeared in goal, making two saves.
Shaw scored twice and put both of his shots on goal, marking his first two goals as a Prairie Star. Sanches recorded an assist and added one shot.Â
"Tonight was our best performance of the season, unfortunately the scoreline doesn't reflect that," said head coach
Graham Shaw. "We fought for 90 minutes between both boxes and executed the game plan very well. We just made a couple of mistakes that led to their goals. Now we move on to UMSL this weekend."
