Illinois Springfield dropped a 1-0 decision to Truman State on Wednesday at Kiwanis Stadium. The Prairie Stars created several scoring opportunities throughout the match, finishing with 12 shots and five on goal.
UIS applied pressure through the middle of the first half, putting shots on goal from
Kalli Drexler,
Sophia Davila and
Jules Sather and earning three corners between 19:31 and 24:48 while the match remained 0-0. The Bulldogs broke through in the 40th minute on Mackenzie Wright's goal, assisted by Sam Busch, and the Prairie Stars went into halftime trailing 1-0.
UIS pushed late in the second half while trailing 1-0, generating three shots and a corner from 79:01 to 87:59 but not finding the net. Davila had two attempts miss high during that stretch, and
Gigi Yurevich made a save in the 89th minute before the match ended with Truman State ahead 1-0.
Yurevich played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded three saves. Drexler and Davila each finished with three shots, one on goal.Â
"I am proud of our overall effort today from several individuals," said head coach
Scott Myers. "I thought our back line solved some problems and made it difficult for Truman State. I also felt
Ellie Mejia had a great game managing the midfield for us today.
Gigi Yurevich continues to lead our back line with experience.
"We fell short on a couple of our game-day goals, but the growth of this program is a process and as long as we continue to take steps forward, I will continue to be proud of our team. Truman State is a good side and has given every team a fit this season and will continue to do so. The GLVC is a tough conference, home or away. We have proven that we can play with anyone this year, but we need to be a bit more clinical in our final moments in front of the goal.
"We have a hard road test at Missouri S&T up next, but I know this group will shake off the loss and come ready to go on Saturday. This group is resilient, and I am grateful that we have adopted a goldfish mentality as games come quickly this part of the season."
