The Illinois Springfield men's tennis team came up just short in a 4-3 loss to Maryville on Friday, falling to 0-3 in conference play.
UIS opened the match with a strong performance in doubles, securing the point with wins on the top two courts.
Pablo Herrera and
Lin En Tan earned a 6-2 victory at No. 1, while
Miran Todorovic and
Kai Van-Roon matched that score with a 6-2 win at No. 2. With the doubles point already decided, the No. 3 match featuring
Lukas Pieringer and
Antonio Ayerbe Streubel was halted with the UIS pair leading 5-2.
In singles play, the Prairie Stars picked up wins at the top of the lineup. At No. 1,
Pablo Herrera delivered a 6-1, 6-4 victory, and
Lin En Tan followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2.
Maryville responded by taking the remaining four singles matches to secure the team victory.
Antonio Ayerbe Streubel dropped a three-set battle at No. 3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Kai Van-Roon suffered a narrow defeat at No. 4, falling 7-6, 7-6 in a match decided by two tiebreakers.
Luke Pennington fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5, and
Lukas Pieringer was defeated 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6.
UIS will return to the court on Saturday for its regular season finale, hosting UMSL at 1:00 p.m. The match will also serve as Senior Day, honoring
Pablo Herrera and
Lin En Tan.
