UIS men's tennis returned to its home courts Saturday and earned a 6-1 victory over Roosevelt at the Springfield Racquet & Fitness Center.
Doubles once again proved pivotal.
Pablo Herrera and
Lin En Tan opened with a 6-2 win, while
Miran Todorovic and
Luke Pennington battled to a 7-5 victory to secure the doubles point. Roosevelt claimed the third flight, defeating
Lukas Pieringer and
Antonio Ayerbe Streubel 6-3.
Carrying that momentum into singles, the Prairie Stars quickly took control. Herrera rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1, and Antonio followed with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2.
Lin En Tan was leading 3-0 at No. 3 before his opponent retired, clinching the team win as UIS secured victories at the top three spots.
Pennington added a gritty three-set win, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 10-4. Todorovic fell in a tight battle, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 11-9, while Pieringer closed out the day with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 victory.
"Once again, doubles came down to the wire," said head coach
Henrique Leal. "The energy was crucial for us to win the doubles point. That same energy translated into singles and we were able to win at numbers 1, 2, and 3 to clinch the match. Our men have won four of the last five matches, and we will keep working hard this week and try to keep the momentum going to get a shot at Purdue Northwest on Friday."
