Strong Fourth Quarter Not Enough for Prairie Stars

Illinois Springfield women's basketball (9-13, 6-8 GLVC) fell to McKendree (12-8, 9-5 GLVC), 83-70, despite forcing 20 turnovers and recording 11 steals. McKendree capitalized on its advantage in the paint, scoring 54 points and securing a 37-19 rebounding edge.

The game commenced with UIS matching McKendree's early efforts, tying the score at 2-2 after Julia Mingus's layup at 9:14. However, McKendree pulled ahead with a series of successful plays, establishing a 14-2 lead. The Prairie Stars struggled offensively, converting only three field goals in the quarter. Despite their defensive efforts, including four steals, the Prairie Stars trailed McKendree 25-9 at the end of the first quarter.

UIS shifted momentum in the second quarter with a series of successful plays in the paint, narrowing the gap against McKendree. Mingus scored a pivotal layup and added a three-pointer, contributing to the Prairie Stars' offensive surge. Despite McKendree's efforts, including a late three, the Prairie Stars outscored McKendree 21-17 in the quarter. The half concluded with McKendree ahead, 42-30.

In the third quarter, the Prairie Stars struggled to match McKendree's scoring in the paint, contributing significantly to the home team's advantage. Kennedy Osterman provided a highlight for the visitors with a layup at 8:37, while Libby Blythe connected on a three-pointer at 4:44. Despite these efforts, McKendree maintained control with consistent scoring and a strong defensive presence, ending the quarter leading 63-41.

In the final quarter, the Prairie Stars surged with a 10-of-13 shooting performance, highlighted by Kayla Rice's three three-pointers. This offensive push closed the gap to a single-digit margin. Despite the Prairie Stars' 29-point fourth quarter, McKendree maintained its lead through consistent free throw shooting and timely baskets, ending the game with a score of 83-70.

Kayla Rice scored 14 points, including three 3-pointers, and recorded three steals. Mingus finished with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. Osterman added 16 points and contributed three steals. Molly Knight converted all four of her field goal attempts and dished out three assists.

The Prairie Stars have a record of 9-13 overall and 6-8 in GLVC play. McKendree holds a record of 12-8 overall and 9-5 in the GLVC.
