The Illinois Springfield baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader in the middle of its four-game series at Florida Southern, winning the first game 5-1 before dropping the second game 11-1. The split moves the Prairie Stars to 5-1 on the season, with Florida Southern now 3-8.

UIS jumped out to an early lead whenÂ
Jesse Contreras walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Kody Morton, while
Kaden Griffitts singled to drive in
Corey Boyette and
Johnny Wendling, giving UIS a 3-0 advantage after one. The Prairie Stars added another run in the third when Boyette scored on a
Tommy Atkinson single following a Morton double, and extended the lead to 5-1 in the fifth on a Griffitts RBI double driving in Atkinson.
Trey Carter got the start, pitching 3 2/3 innings with five hits and one earned run, striking out three.
Derek Huber (1-0) earned the win with 2 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out two, while
Austin Loberger closed the game, preserving the lead.
Corey Boyette went 2-for-3 with two runs scored,
Kaden Griffitts added three RBIs, and
Tommy Atkinson contributed two hits and one RBI.
The five-game win streak marked UIS'Â best start to a season since opening 2019 with eight straight victories.
GAME THREE | L, 11-1
Florida Southern jumped ahead with two first-inning runs, while UIS answered with its lone run on a passed ball in the second. The Mocs broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning and added runs in the fifth and sixth, taking control of the contest. UIS managed just three hits and left six runners on base, struggling to convert scoring opportunities.
Mark DeCicco started for UIS, allowing five earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings.
Jacob McPherson,
Jaden Mathon,
Kyle Tyler, and
Stephen Eskridge combined for the remainder of the pitching effort, but Florida Southern pulled away for the 11-1 victory in 8 innings.
