The UIS baseball team dropped Sunday's series finale against Missouri Southern, falling 13-12 despite a late rally. The loss snaps the team's 15-game winning streak, though it still holds onto a 10-game streak in conference play. The Prairie Stars now sit at 24-11 on the season and have narrowed the all-time series gap with MSSU to 5-4.
Game Recap
- Starter Adam Lindsey allowed just a single in a scoreless top of the first. In the bottom half, UIS struck early with a two-run homer from Ivan Dahlberg, bringing home Mark Kattula who had singled to lead off the inning.
- The Lions got on the board with a triple and a groundout in the second to make it 2-1. Dahlberg added a solo shot in the third, his second home run of the day, giving UIS a 3-1 lead.
- MSSU chipped away again in the fourth, scoring on a pair of hits and leaving two runners stranded. UIS responded in the bottom half when Kody Morton led off with a double and later came around to score on a wild pitch following a pitching change.
- The game swung dramatically in the fifth. MSSU erupted for six runs on five hits, including home runs both before and after a UIS pitching change.
- UIS stayed in the fight. Kattula scored in the fifth on a Kody Morton RBI single after reaching on a base hit of his own.
- The Lions added three more in the sixth to go up 10-5, aided by a walk, a double, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly. UIS clawed back in the bottom half as Kattula doubled to bring in Jackson Blemler, followed by a hit-by-pitch RBI to Michael Paule with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to 10-7.
- Both teams were held scoreless in the seventh, with Kyle Tyler pitching effectively in relief for UIS.
- In the eighth, MSSU extended its lead with a leadoff homer and added two more runs off a hit-by-pitch and a fielder's choice after UIS used both Jake Uber and Jacob Goss out of the bullpen.
- UIS mounted a rally in the bottom of the eighth. Paule launched a three-run home run to cut the deficit to 13-10, prompting another MSSU defensive change.
- Seth Masters worked the top of the ninth and kept MSSU off the scoreboard despite giving up a hit.
- The Prairie Stars nearly completed the comeback in the ninth. Blemler led off with a solo home run—his first of the season and third as a Prairie Star. Bowers and Kattula followed with back-to-back singles, forcing MSSU to go to the bullpen once again. Dahlberg was retired on a big out before Johnny Wendling singled to bring home Bowers and move pinch-runner Nicholas Crowe into scoring position. The game ended on a lineout by Paule, snagged on a leaping play by the third baseman.
- Adam Lindsey went four innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out four. The loss was charged to Jack Tobin (3-1), who entered to start the fifth and recorded two outs.
- At the plate, Mark Kattula had a standout day, going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and an RBI. Ivan Dahlberg, Kody Morton, and Jackson Blemler each went 2-for-4—Dahlberg scored three times and added an RBI and a walk; Morton drove in one and scored once; and Blemler tallied two runs and an RBI. Michael Paule's lone hit was a three-run homer in the eighth, finishing 1-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored.
